The trend the last 2 weeks makes me think GOP will add several Senate seats, and the House trend the next month will also likely improve for the GOP. RCP has pushed more House seats towards GOP per the aggregate poll methods they use the last ten days.

Democrats will take the house. Republicans will maintain the senate. We need checks and balances. Republicans are cowards because they won’t stand up to Trumps bullying. What a great bunch who are supposed to work for us. Republicans are a joke and became yes men to Trump

I am not sure on the House, but it will be ultra close either way. Not about checks and balances-just about 435 different races. People vote for just ONE House member-theirs.

GOP IMO will likely add 3-5 Senate seats as I expect toss ups to keep tracking their way.

Amazing decade: 1/20/2009 saw Dems with 256 House members plus 55 Senators on 1/20/2009.

I doubt we will ever see in our lifetimes the 2010 GOP wave, by either party, again.

It is about checks and balances though. We have none right now. Independents will decide.

Really? Until about a week or so ago, many right here on CD posted the Dems would take over both houses. Now many are saying only the senate. I think it is pretty certain the GOP will hold the senate, but the house is still up in the air and I am not convinced it will swing to the Dems. I do agree a balance is best but why do I think if the shoe was on the other foot you would not want to see the GOP take anything? As for being cowards, I think NOT!!!!! Both sides are expected to make an attempt to work with the elected President.

Yes men that still don't have a wall or an ACA repeal. Get a grip on reality.

I am curious: I think the Dems take the house but by less than 5 seats. With all these Dem challengers running on the promise they will not vote for Pelosi if elected, what happens if when the vote for speaker occurs, and Pelosi gets less votes that the Republican speaker candidate?

Typically in practice, the majority party whips its members to vote for the designated House speaker before the official vote of the entire House actually takes place. If Democrats win the majority but there are too many members who refuse to support Pelosi as speaker after extended discussions, then most likely others in the party will put their names forward and a consensus will be reached in private.

Maybe it will be another member of the current membership like Hoyer or Clyburn - I don't think any Democrats are visibly campaigning against either one. Both of these congressmen are elderly so ultimately the role would have to be handed off to someone else in the next several years, assuming Democrats keep control of the chamber. But I can't see a scenario where the House speaker is from the minority party. If Republicans retain the majority, McCarthy will probably be speaker but he could have some internal opposition as well.
