MUSCATINE, Ia. — While Iowa struggles on whether to restore voting rights to felons who have completed their prison sentences, Sen. Bernie Sanders said people convicted of felonies should never lose access to the ballot box in the first place.
That’s how it is now in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Iowa is one of only 12 states that don’t automatically restore voting rights after incarceration and parole, with most of those 12 in the South or Midwest.
That's Bernie.
Considering how many people are incarcerated for drugs who never committed a violent crime, losing one's voting rights is something he thinks should be reconsidered.
A convicted person who's out on appeal can still vote. So can a person with a mental disease, and so can an illiterate who can't read. Citizenhood in the United States allows us all the right to vote no matter who we are, or what we once did by rights granted to us by God. That's what the Constitution says. But we have tried to make exceptions to the Constitution ever since, denying some while permitting others.
And prison is supposed to be a place where people change their ways and emerge after serving their sentence honest citizens again. How can an honest citizen who's paid the penalty society demanded be denied the right to vote?
I think there's a case to be made for reform that could be argued on both sides of this issue. To me, this speaks more about the failure of our penal system as it does the the rights of citizenhood.

I agree, the whole idea about not letting felons vote is wrong headed. What's funny is that there are huge prisons in rural areas of California and in the census even though the inmates can't vote they are counted as constituents giving districts with large prisons more power than they would have otherwise.
Bernie is recommending convicts be allowed to vote while still in prison, not after release and supposed rehabilitation. I firmly believe voting rights should be suspended while removed from society, whether it be for a non-violent crime, or murder. If one abuses society's rules, then one isn't contributing to the greater good. F'em.

If there are more prisoners in prison than people in the town the prisoners would basically be running the town because they would have more votes than the honest law abiding citizens.
Sounds like a great idea by 3-homes Sanders. A better policy would be one vote per conviction though. And $1 million per year for each prisoner as a reparation.
Bernie is a joke, but he did win the debate as the hosts were not capable of having Bernie answer any decent question.
Bernie didn’t answer many questions but attacked Trump.
However, Bernie lost as not one Trump supporter will vote for him and he needs their votes to beat Trump.
I had to change channels as it was a waste to listen longer to his so called socialist who doesn’t give his money but only want to spend other peoples money like all hypocrites.
Socialism is bad to the core.
