When was the last time in either party that a two-term sitting VP didn't even make a run at his party's nomination? Has that ever occurred in the history of US presidential politics?
I think it's a telling symptom of the sickness within the GOP at present. The public loathes Cheney, and for good reason. Bush stupidly chose Cheney as his closest and most trusted advisor. Cheney's short-sighted and wrong-headed advice has driven America off the rails. But Bush enjoys pretending that he's still the engineer.
He's had to go somewhere quiet and safe (fragile, remember, from heart surgery) to have his aides carry his boatloads of blood money in so he can sit down to count it.
He's evil. No other word.
Then why in the world did he choose himself as vice president, then? At any point in time, he could have become president.
I guess he LIED (SURPRISE!!!)about never wanting to be president... He also knows that he wouldn't have a chance to win an election......the man is evil and has all the charm of a devil-posessed warthog.....even the most rabid neocon wouldn't vote for him.
So they took off his glasses, gave him a little plastic surgery and morphed him into McCain....that's why you never see Cheney anymore....
Cheney decided long ago, during the first term, he would NOT be running for the presidency.
