Hogan won the governorship because his opponents stunk. IMHO, they were truly awful candidates. That said, the democrats are going to remind voters that actions speak louder than words. https://time.com/6694872/larry-hogan...tors-abortion/

And Democrats in Maryland are dumb enough to believe that electing a pro-choice Republican to a federal office will somehow threaten their ability to get an abortion in deep blue Maryland. At least I’m hoping so.

His approval rating as governor among Dems and Rs is high though.
They are hit or miss with confirmations, e.g. Collins confirmed Kavanaugh, Murkowski confirmed Gorsuch. It might not be SCOTUS appointments anyways as there might not be a retirement, but lower court nominations.
Hogan would be the same. Plus if he was elected, he would be in for six years, in to the 2028 Presidency, past Trump or Biden.
He would be the most frequent Republican voice on NBC and ABC Sunday morning shows, as Murkowski and Collins seem less frequent to go to the talk shows, and other Republicans might be too hostile or not interested to waste their time on answering loaded questions (from their perspective) from ABC or NBC panelists.

I cannot stand the idea of watching that fat slob trashing conservatives for six years while lying about being a Republican.
Fortunately, I won't have to judging by the responses on this thread.

You are right, Hogan will not vote to approve bills that create additional abortion providers who aren't licensed doctors or require health care providers to give them out for free.
These are moderate positions, neither banning abortions nor throwing the weight of the state behind promoting them, well moderate positions for most people, not most downstate MDers.
But yeah, expect a ton of this. The article is garbage, IMO, you could write an article from the exact opposite POV. "Every time Hogan acts sorta like a Republican, the liberal media will remember and amplify it." Just like, "Every time he sorta acts like a Democrat some moderate will remember and support it." Deep insights.....

How high was his approval rating as governor? Was he also a moderate? Larry Hogan has a very very high approval rating, including 81% of Democrats saying they approve of the job he was doing as governor in a Jan 2023 poll. In 2018 he won by a wider margin than any gubernatorial candidate in the states history. 31% of Dems voted for him. The only group he lost was voters younger than 29.
It goes to show most people want moderates, regardless of party. If he ran for President, or Chris Sununu, or Andy Beshear, they’d win in a landslide.
Yes, Bredesen's approval ratings as Governor was really high. He literally swept every county during his 2nd term and won statewide by almost 40 points. Now, granted he was out of office for eight years as opposed to Hogan being out for two years and unlike Hogan really did not stay in the spotlight, but point remains just because someone can win a race as Governor doesn't mean they can win as Senator. Not that it is impossible, but its more difficult, especially when the state leans the opposite way of your party, no matter how much you try to distance yourself from it.

I think in the end, the election results will be determined by the youngest voters. They want their voice heard, and unlike Hogan, they won't waste their vote on a deceased politician.
Lifelong Maryland Democrat who supported and voted for Governor Hogan twice. I liked how he ran the state, how he handled COVID and how he was one of the very few Republicans who had the balls to speak out against Donald Trump.
While so many in the GOP were cowards and hide their true feelings about a man like Donald Trump Larry Hogan was not afraid to share how he felt. I will always admire him for that and always consider people like Kevin McCarthy gutless cowards who went from saying "I'm done with this guy" to kissing his ass almost overnight.
But if it came to choosing who will represent Maryland on the Hill, and possibly determine majority control, I just have to vote Democrat.
There are currently on 5 Senators in seats from states who supported a Presidential candidate of the opposing party in the most recent Presidential election- Collins in Maine, Tester in Montana, Brown in Ohio, Manchin in WV and Johnson in Wi. Johnson won in absolute squeaker in an evenly divided state. Maine is a very independent minded state and Collins a 30 year incumbent. Manchin is leaiving the Senate because he will lose that WV race if he runs again.
I think in the end Maryland will follow the trend of that occurs 99% of the time- without a scandal or a wave election, states will vote for the Senator inline with voter party preference. I think Hogan will outperform other Rs but Maryland is D state.
