I think it has more to do with both McCain and Obama and the rest of the country all realize thet McCain would get skewered in any real debates. So McCain is trying to substitute chat sessions, and Obama may agree by tossing him a couple bones, but there is no reason he should give up the typical debate format either to let McCain off the hook.

It is a subtle point.

His response to this idea does not jive with his message of changechangechangeohmmmmmm and unity. He is just the same old politics as usual.

RealClearPolitics - Articles - Why Won't Obama Agree to Townhalls?

So many questions, so little time. If Obama really means to change the political landscape, he ought to agree to lots of open exchanges with McCain. And if he won't, the media should ask, why not?

Default More nonsense here

Let me get this straight.

- McCain proposes town hall meetings.
- Obama doesn't agree to the format or the meetings.
- So Obama is afraid and his message of unity is not true because he won't agree to town hall meetings?

Absolutely absurd. Quite pathetic in fact. You Obama haters are a great source of levity for me. Not only do you confirm that Obama is by far the best candidate, but that you are not on his level. He transcends you and so do his supporters. So continue flailing away in the dark in the same manner that Hillary supporters were doing.

You can't stop the plain and simple fact that, this BLACK MAN, is better, far more versatile, far more intelligent, far more dignified, far more qualified than you can comprehend. Obama is our next president, like it or not.

This is a sad post. If all Obamatrons think like you, then they all prove our point. NO UNITY coming from the Obama side at all. All lies.

"I'm the great Obama and you WILL bow down to me". Just a pitiful attitude coming from the Obama camp.

Really a sad statement on what a pathetic country the U.S. has become.

Methinks you make personal attacks and methinks I don't care what you think.

You Obamatrons continue to inject race into this campaign at every chance. Really a cheap way to try to win an election.....by making all your opponents racist.

Looks to many like the racist shoe falls squarely in the Obama camp.

What I found hilarious was their feeling that McCain wanted to fly together to share the cost because he isn't as wealthy as Obama and needs the help.
Yes. Also McCain is WAY behind in fundraising. These things are free advertising. What did Hillary want when she was out of money? Debates. These town hall meetings amount to free prime-time exposure that McCain could not otherwise afford.

Yooo Hooo! Did you actually read the article? Because I did and lookey what I read:

"Obama campaign manager David Plouffe offered Friday to hold one town hall meeting on the economy in July and one debate on foreign policy in August, in addition to the three debates traditionally held in the fall before the November election."

So. A debate every month between now and the election. Did you overlook that little detail? Apparently if you read the article, you find out Obama isn't afraid of town hall meetings--he wants to establish he is not a doormat. This is about establishing who is the lead dog in the pack.

BTW, if you want to have a reputation of being a uniter, you have to start out by making sure you are not seen as a doormat.
