How did he get away with this? I dont really care how long ago, it still shows blatant disregard for authority, and common decency. I live in an area where street parking is VERY hard to find, so its people like this who park illegally and dont care that really get to me.
As long as he wasn't parked in designated disabled parking spots, and paid his fines who the hell cares?
Like I said, this may seem minor, but to those who live in an area where parking is hard to come by, and for those who actually obey the law and pay their bills, I just find it a bit slimy and selfish of him.
Im sure that you or I wouldnt get away with not paying our tickets for 15 years...unless you were the valedictorian at Harvard too? Special treatment...exactly what I dont want our president to expect.
"He had no idea he had outstanding charges," Champion said. "The Globe, by raising the issue, called it to his attention, and then he paid them immediately."
It is pretty easy to get a ticket and not know it (especially in college). Especially if you move away and the city doesn't come after you.
Here in Chicago, where they are maniacal about issuing tickets (and where it is difficult to find street parking), I got one once and didn't know it because it was torn off my car (for some reason) and so I didn't know for months (I only had a car for a short time because it became too much of a pain in the butt to keep one here). If I moved away from Chicago, I might have never known about it if they choose not to come after me.
So quite frankly, I don't care about Obama's parking tickets or McCain's unpaid parking tickets while in college (I remember from my college days it was almost a rite of passage to get parking tickets and see how long you could go without paying them), to focus on such a trivial issue is rather silly. It isn't like he refused to pay them when they were brought to his attention.
I once accidentally 'stole' a book from my college library and forgot about it (I simply forgot to return it and then quit going to school there), it was brought to my attention 10 years later when I wanted transcripts and couldn't get them, naturally I promptly paid the library for the book I inadvertently ran off with and had long since donated to goodwill (if I hadn't requested transcripts, I doubt they would have ever pursued me on this, unless of course I ran for public office), does that make me slimy and expecting of special treatment?
The same way McCain got away with not paying taxes.
I love it! The childish..."well he did it too!" defense. This is one of the major reasons I wish there was a way for both McCain and Obama to fail miserably. Our election is nothing more than a pathetic who f'd up less contest, and fight to see how quickly we can deflect blame without hurting "your" side.
