I enjoyed this interview. It gave me a bit more insight on his background and opinions on foreign affairs.

I hope so too, it is a nice reprieve from the unsubstantial petty vitriol tossed around these boards. I was hoping for some actual thoughtful discussion beyond the three word smearfest threads and the New Yorker silliness.

Hey, I'm having fun smearing poor old Johnny Mac three words at a time

I'd love it if we could have a discussion of the "Making It" article in the infamous New Yorker 7/21 issue. If people would just read it they'd have a much better picture of who Obama is and... could post more interesting smear words, at least.

It just shows his lack of understanding of foreign policy. Afghanistan held their first presidential election in 2004 and Hamid Karzai became the first democratically elected president of Afghanistan. The government of Afghanistan has had the last 4 years to start taking over the country from NATO and the US and they have done so. The assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007 was a blow to the stability of the region. NATO and the US had hopes of Bhutto and Karzai working together to secure the Pakistan-Afghan border. Let us not forget Pakistan is a third world country and therefore an easy puppet society for the Taliban. The US has not failed in Afghanistan, nor have they been preoccupied with Iraq, rather we could not have foreseen the assassination of Bhutto a beloved leader and a key to pulling Pakistan out of the world of Taliban domination. President Musharraf understands the importance of border security between his country and Afghan, but he does not share the same leadership qualities as Bhutto. He is having a hard time as the Pakistani military is reluctant to engage in fighting with other Pakistanis when many members of the Taliban are also their family members.

I've printed it out but haven't finished reading it yet as I've been rather busy, but that is definitely something I'm interested in. I'm pretty familiar with Chicago politics (as they have affected me where it hurts pretty much my entire life as I grew up a stone's throw away from the south-side) so I'm curious to read an in depth piece on that particular side of Obama (I've read a fair amount though all ready from our local media).

Wow, excellent post!

Obama was talking about collecting Bin Laden and getting closure for 9/11. I think he's proven he's sensitive to nuances in the paths of government and countries' histories. The opposite of the Bush 2003 approach.

Could not have foreseen a rival Pakistani politician getting assasinated? You've got to be kidding me.
