Is Bush undercutting McCain's attack on Obama's diplomacy efforts?

Bush's tough talk is for less than nothing.
If Obama's diplomacy talk is a problem for somewhat does this mean to them.
Not only are we now talking to Iran, as Bush said he would never do. We now will have diplomatic presence an interests section (mini embassy) located in the Iranian capita.
The world is ending, oh never mind talk of Bush is border line insanity. It shows what disregard for life of our military forces he truly has.

Report: U.S. to Establish First Diplomatic Presence in Iran Since 1979
Thursday , July 17, 2008

LONDON —

The United States will announce in the next month that it plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran for the first time in 30 years, a British newspaper said on Thursday.
In a front-page report, the Guardian said Washington would open a U.S. interests section in the Iranian capital, halfway towards opening an embassy.

The unsourced report by the newspaper's Washington correspondent said: "The Guardian has learned that an announcement will be made in the next month to establish a U.S. interests section in Tehran, a halfway house to setting up a full embassy.

"The move will see U.S. diplomats stationed in the country."

Senior U.S. diplomat William Burns said in testimony to Congress last week the United States was looking to opening up an interest section in Tehran but had not made a decision yet.

The Guardian said the development was "a remarkable turnaround in policy by President George Bush who has pursued a hawkish approach to Iran throughout his time in office".

Washington said on Wednesday it was sending Burns to join atomic talks with Iran this weekend to signal to Tehran and others that Washington wanted a diplomatic solution to their nuclear impasse.

Iran says its nuclear work is for peaceful power generation, and not for the development of nuclear weapons as the West suspects, and has rejected conditions it give up uranium enrichment.

On Sunday, President Amhmoud Ahmadinejad suggested Iran would consider any proposal by the United States for a U.S. interests section in the Islamic Republic, should one be forthcoming.

U.S. media have reported that the State Department is considering opening an interests section that could mean U.S. diplomats returning to Tehran but operating under another country's flag.

The United States cut off diplomatic ties with Tehran during the 1979-1981 hostage crisis, in which a group of militant Iranian students held 52 U.S. diplomats hostage at the American embassy for 444 days.

Iran maintains an interests section at the embassy of Pakistan in Washington. Mottaki said it serves the large Iranian community in the United States.

They had all this time, and now that it's down to the wire they scramble to get the Iraqis on their feet and negotiate with Iran. Too bad they couldnt have made these efforts a few thousand dead soldiers ago. Oh well.

Yes indeed.

Waiting now for the Obamabashers to start spouting off that Bush is "negotiating with terrorists" but somehow the silence is deafening.

The truth of the matter is that Bush - after a first term full of bellicose blusterning that has done ENORMOUS damage to our foreign relations - has belately realized that diplomacy has an important part to play and that it's even more important to talk to you enemies than it is to talk to you friends.

Something Obama has been saying all along.
Hmmmmmm.

I think on the face of it, this seems like a dumb move by the Bush Administration. It goes against all they've said about negotiating with Iran.

I'll give them a few days and see if more info comes out to make this decision clearer.

If it's just negotiating with those scumbags for the sake of appeasement...then I, who support this administration will not support that move.

We shall see. I would imagine we are going to find out something interesting here, that sticks it to Iran. I'm going to wait a bit and see.

The Iranians have had an "interest section" in this country for quite a while. I believe it's in the Swedish embassy. We would do the same - under another countrys' flag.

Not a big deal, and certainly nothing close to what Obama proposes - having the CIC sit down and talk to the nut.

Good idea actually - a place where dissendents, students and the like can go and get "info".

It is certainly way closer to what Obama has suggested then it is to Bush's past position.
At the pace of these flip-flops, Bush & nut may well be sitting down for breakfast by the end of the week.

Having a third-tier State Department diplomat is equivalent to the President sitting down himself?

Closer than having NOBODY be there.

I think you will have to show me where I said that?

They are the big first two steps in the direction of diplomacy.
As I'm sure you remember, Both McCain & Bush had criticized Obama for suggesting such methods.
