It occured to me that at age 72 not only is there a danger that he might die in office if elected and catapult the totally not ready for prime time Gov. Palin into the oval office......but he might die before inaugeration or even before the election.

Is there any provision for replacing the official nominee of the party if they should die during the campaign. Would the party need a new convention? This must be a party rule as the selection of candidates isnt covered in the Constitution.
Does anyone know? If McCain were to die during the campaign, would the official nominee for VP hang on or would the new nominee get to select their running mate?

The GOP would have to gather and scare up a new candidate. That new candidate is free to choose his or her running mate, so Palin might be out of luck. I could be wrong, but, I believe the same rule applies even after the election but before the inauguration. After the inauguration, if the president should die (God forbid), then there is a clearly delineated chain of command. The Vice President is first in line, obviously.

Yeah, and Nancy Pelosi is third in line.....now that's just too frightening to consider.

That really scares me that Pelosi could ever be president. It literally makes me ill.

John McCain has had 4 bouts with cancer and he only allowed limited release of his medical records. His health is clearly a concern....not just because of his age but also his health history. He also appears to many to be "less sharp and more befuddled and to require handlers to point and direct him, very much the way Nancy helped her Ronnie toward the end of his public life. At times he can't remember which country heads of state represent and other times he forgets strategic borders and the alliegances of friends and foes. He also is socially inappropriate...but that has always been a problem.
