The rally started at 9:30, and I got downtown at about 8:45 only to find a line stretching for about 3 blocks to get into the plaza. Was still able to get in, despite being WAY in the back. The crowd was estimated at about 16,000 by our local press, which wasn't too bad for a dreary, sometimes wet, weekday morning in the heart of Republican Country (our county went 59% Bush in 04).
The line:
Rally prep:
People crammed up to the fence outside the "secured" area. It was open to the public, but some people did not have time to go through security.
My vantage point from just in front of the outer fence. A poor stitch job, but you get the idea:
About all I saw of Obama from there, in the center at the podium (but you could hear him loud and clear):
Too bad that screen thingy was blocking your view.
Did he have anything new to say? What seemed to get the crowd the most excited? My friends dd got to see him during the primaries....she came away very impressed and excited.
Glad you got to go, it looks like it was a fun time!

Yeah, occasionally I could see him. The two things that got people the most fired up (I noticed) were investing in alternative energy to create jobs, and getting out of Iraq and the $10 Billion/month we're spending there.
Didn't hear anything new, but I think a lot of people were just happy that he was paying attention to our little corner of the universe.
No, I take that back. He touched on the cynicism of Americans right now with what's happening on Wall Street and in D.C., and asked people to put aside that cynicism and help get things on track. And he said that the plan that the Senate passed and that he hopes the House will pass is just the beginning to fixing the problems with our economy, and don't expect instant success. It was pretty straightforward and honest, yet still optimistic.
Local press says about 16,000 pirate girl, which as I mentioned, was not bad considering it was only about 50 degrees out and somewhat dreary, wet, and a weekday morning.
There were about 12 McCain protesters across the street, but they were very quiet and just holding up McCain signs.
