Wow oh wow the are throwing him under the curb.
Bush Strategist: McCain Knows He Put Country At Risk With Palin Pick
Matthew Dowd, a prominent political consultant and chief strategist for George W. Bush's reelection campaign eviscerated John McCain on Tuesday for his choice of Sarah Palin as vice president.

Dowd proclaimed that, in his heart of hearts, McCain knew he put the country at risk with his VP choice and that he would "have to live" with that fact for the rest of his career.

Seems like everyday ranking Republicans are throwing McCain under the bus. How much longer can the good Senator keep the wheels on his campaign?

But, but, but...

He's not a real conservative Republican. He's just a paid "strategist." He's probably just another one of those commie rat bastards. What does he know?

Matthew Dowd put the country at risk when he helped George Bush get elected. Matthew Dowd should be beaten.

CNN just had Dowd on talking about these comments. Ed Rollins disagreed and felt that if McCain loses it will because he didn't connect with voters.

No, McCain was connected with his base, but became totally DISCONNECTED after the Palin pick.

Always make me laugh how y'all call Bush and his GOP cronies a bunch of doofuses but you can't wait to quote them when you agree with them.

This is sort of a key point, because you are absolutely right that this happens.

But I think you are missing why it happens - and why it happens in either direction:

The issue is one of seeing a person turn against his or her former leader/teammate. It make the declaration seem less partisan because the speaker presumably had some prior positive connection.

So, when the former fund raiser for Hillary Clinton offered support to McCain, this was big news. When former Clinton cabinet members supported Obama in the primaries, that, too, was big news. Having Chuck Hagel and/or Colin Powell leaning toward Obama is big news.
