this bill proposed by obama would cost taxpayers as much as the proposed cost of the bailout! (although we know that the bailout will cost substantially more when implemented since they have already run out of their initial money!) do we really need to spend 845 billion (or more) to fight global poverty now when our own country is in so much trouble??
what about taking care of americans first!

One word...YES, it is ridiculous and not our problem. We have helped these countries before and they still are in the need they are because of their own governments.

Problem is be it USA or UN (UN gives pennies compared to USA) funds given to corrupt countries wind up in corrupt leaders safe deposit boxes.

I would love the idea if the corrupt leaders wouldn't get their slimey claws on the funds but they do and will thus its money flushed into the sewer of corruption .

No one benefits certainly not the people its made to help. In theory it sounds great in reality might as well save time and hand the funds directly to the criminals who run most of these countries.

I hadn't heard of this before (there are many things I haven't heard of), and lacking a description in this thread, I googled "Global Poverty Act."

According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Global Poverty Act is a bill currently in the U.S. Congress. The bill is co-sponsored by 84 representatives and 30 senators.

It does not allocate any funding.

The Global Poverty Act would require the U.S. President to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day.
Wikipedia (not my favorite online resource) fortunately provides a link to the actual bill in THOMAS, a legislative database maintained by the Library of Congress.

Quote:
110th CONGRESS 1st Session H. R. 1302
To require the President to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
March 1, 2007

Mr. SMITH of Washington (for himself and Mr. BACHUS) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs
There are 84 co-sponsors in the House. After it was introduced in the House, on Dec. 7, 2007 Obama introduced the same bill in the Senate (S. 2433). It has 30 co-sponsors, and also does not allocate any funding.

Just so people know what they're talking about.

I completely agree!
We cannot afford it!

We need to spend dollars at home on national infrastructure.
Many bridges in our country are in need of repair or replacement.
We could also benefit from some high-speed rail projects.
China is kicking our rear-end in this department (building).

The first state to secede will be my new home. It'll probably be Montana but I'm kind of hoping for a state with a coastline.

I'm sick of saving the world... Charity begins at home.

Yes, very angry to be honest and yet because most of the people who are so woo'd by Obama don't pay attention to the records and the bills, these massive spending sprees will go unchecked if we have both Obama and a filibuster proof congress.

The bright side of the flaming decent if this all comes to pass is that they will no longer have anyone to blame when this happens. They have ran around and pointed fingers at Bush (and I admit I think he has made some very poor decisions) while ignoring the acts of the democrats. If they get this, they get it all. A Democrat president who is hard liberal/socialist and a house and a senate ran by some of the most corrupt and foul crazies this country has seen. They have no where to hide once they make this choice and blaming Bush won't be a easy out anymore.

Well, I normally don't get on the "OMG the sky is falling" bandwagon, but it is hard to not be very concerned about an unchecked congress with a socialist president. If we get enough seats back in the house and senate, it might not be so bad even if he is elected. It won't be good, that is for sure, but we might be able to stave off some of the bills that Obama would sign in without a second thought.

Ive read several of the proposals and bills Obama has been a part of in the recent past and I can only say that I have never seen such blatant disregard for the purpose of our government. People joke about "Obama Nation", but some of these bills are so socialist, they make the bailout look like it is conservative.

edit:

One other concern of my is him selling out our nations sovereignty to the UN by signing us into the clauses that would make us accountable to the UN which I believe to be one of the most corrupt organizations of our time. /shudder

My crystal ball says that after they get absolutely nothing accomplished at the mid-term point, the spin will be that 8 years of Bush cannot be fixed quickly or easily. GOP will gain seats in two years.

But honestly, an Obama Presidency is probably the best thing to happen to the GOP. Time to refocus, return to the roots, and get ready to clean up the mess in 2012.
