In the past 50 years, The Eagle has never recommended a Democrat for president. We made no recommendations in 1960 and 1964 -- when Texas' own Lyndon B. Johnson was on the Democratic ticket -- nor did we in 1968 -- although we did praise Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey's position on the Vietnam War. We did not in 1976 and 1980. In 1972, The Eagle recommend Richard Nixon, in 1984, Ronald Reagan. We recommended George H.W. Bush in 1988 and 1992 and his son in 2000. We recommended Bob Dole in 1996.

With hope in our hearts and confidence in our choice, The Eagle recommends a vote for Barack Obama for president.
If anyone here knows anything about College Station, Texas, you are sure to be wondering if what you are hearing is the sound of ice cubes clinking together in hell!
Well since they recommended the Bushes, I'm not sure their judgement is very sound.
But I'm glad they broke with tradition and are endorsing the right candidate this time around.
I can't believe it. I live in Texas, and this is unheard of. Could the Abilene Reporter News be next? I don't believe hell has frozen over yet, but there must be a little frost down there. (If the ARN ever supports a Democrat, we will be absolutely confident that hell HAS frozen over...)

Good God! The area around College Station is the mecca of right-wing-dom. Many a friend of mine has gone there for college and come out a cookie-cutter Republican.
A super-conservative former co-worker from a newsroom where I used to work a few years ago is at the Eagle now. (Yes, conservatives work at newspapers too, can you believe it?) I'm sure this was not her doing, but I'm still surprised. College Station is as right-leaning as a college town gets.
Many of my friends and former neighbors are Aggies and I love and respect them all. Short of the US Military Academies, West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy there is no more dedicated group of alums in the country, although I guess The Citadel is up there too.
I realize the B/CS newspaper does not speak for the graduates from the '60s, or any other era, but this is huge news. I'm sure I'll be getting emails today from some of them beginning to wonder FTW is going on.
The local area definitely reflects the attitude on campus.
Oh, wait, endorsements don't matter, except if the NYT had endorsed McCain we'd be getting told all day how critical they are and that they spell the end of the McCain campaign.
Awesome! I am so happy republicans are looking past dividing lines to who is really qualified to lead this country. There are sooooo many signs in my neighborhood that say "Republicans for Obama", it warms my heart

Bryan/College Station Eagle - Barack Obama is the better choice for president (http://www.theeagle.com/editorial/Barack-Obama-is-the-better-choice-for-president - broken link)
This is so ignorant. No wonder my husband can't stand the Aggies! lol

and Sen. Barack Obama, who also wears the change mantle, but offers a vision for the future, even if he has yet to fully explain how he would carry out that vision if elected president in little more than two weeks.
Even "IF" we don't know where he is taking us, we are going to vote for him.
Lord, that reminds me of the Aggie that drowned in the back of a pickup truck, during a flood, because he couldn't get the tailgate down in order to get out of the truck!!!!
