In the fall of 1979, a "student" uprising in Iran took our appeasement prone get-everyone-to-like-us President Carter by complete surprise. He, out of the goodness of his heart, came up with the brilliant idea of allowing the Shah to fall thus encouraging democracy to take root in that part of the world. After all, they were revolutionaries just like or Founding Fathers, right? The "students" surrounded and eventually stormed our embassy. Since President Carter was concerned that US Marines defending the embassy's sovereign US soil with real bullets would look bad on TV, he had previously ordered the otherwise capable Jar-heads to use only CS gas to defend the embassy with the very predictable results that followed. On Nov. 4th 1979, the US embassy in Iran was over run by Islamic terrorists and the personnel inside taken hostage. As the world looked on, Carter sought out someone involved with whom to negotiate terms for their release. It became obvious to the USSR that our President had no stomach for military conflicts and truly was in over his head.
Less than two months after the embassy fell, on Dec. 24th of the same year, and witnessing the anemic resolve of our President, the USSR invaded Afghanistan to prop up the illegitimate commie puppet government of the PDPA. The party unexpectedly came to power through a military coup d'etat on 27 April 1978. There was no evidence that the USSR organized or controlled the coup, but it rushed advisers to Kabul to help consolidate the new regime under the PDPA leader, Nur Muhammad Taraki. The war that followed has been called the USSR's Viet-Nam. AP estimates death tolls on both sides total 2,000,000 persons.
Soon after the new Islamic government was in control of Iran and the stabilizing presence of the US was gone, the Iran-Iraq war began. Timeframe estimates 900,000 Iranians and 300,000 Iraqis lost their lives. Furthermore, Iran has become a terrorist state that has sworn to destroy Israel and has an active nuclear weapons program underway.
One poor decision, 3,200,000 lives lost, world peace and stability permanently damaged.
Now, presidential candidate Obama has pledged in his naivety that he will remove the US troops from Iraq on the fly!

More than what would be lost if we finish this thing out. He doesn't care though, he just wants to look like a hero and he will be able to say he ended the war.

All US embassies are guarded by Marines. Carter ordered them to use CS gas only.
They said the same thing when Bill Clinton was running.. omg we will have another Carter on our hands.
lets look at it this way, the Intel was wrong for Carter, noone saw it coming.
