As folks are still heading out to vote on the West Coast I'm shaking my head in disbelief that many networks are delicately tap-dancing around just saying "Welcome to the White House, President Obama."

Does anyone else think this is blatantly unfair that practically every election people head to the polls on the West Coast feeling as if their votes don't even matter because we power-houses in the East like PA, OH, MI, FL, NC, and VA have already made the decision for them?

What can be done to better motivate election turn out in the West? Should major news networks be restricted from providing up-to-the-minute results from East Coast states until West Coast states' polls have closed? Should polls close universally at a set time? (11 PM East, 10 PM Central, 9 PM Mountain, 8 PM Pacific, 7 PM Alaska, 6 PM Hawaii)?

Do folks out West feel as if their votes truly don't matter?

Oh god no, I definitely don't feel that way! My vote mattered, all right. I have never felt I didn't matter just because my vote was going to be counted later at night.

Voting should be changed to a week long event, like we're seeing in a lot of states with early voting. Vote when you can. Imagine the huge drop in voter suppression charges, voting machine problems, lines, etc.. Just save Nov. 4th for counting the ballots.

Plus, the dirty campaigns are less likely to try and re-drop a bunch of the same bombs in the days leading up to the election.

I don't know about an entire week, but here in PA with our hectic rush-rush schedules it certainly isn't fair to only be given 13 hours in which to vote. Today I had class 8-2, an exam 3-5, and class 6-8. If I didn't go to vote between 7 AM-8 AM I would not have been able to (and due to the long line I was still late for my 8 AM auditing class). We don't all have the luxury of free time. Some of us are BUSSSYY!!!

The only way to make it extremely fair is to get rid of the Electoral vote.

I've lived in California all my life, and this has never bothered me. I just hope it doesn't discourage people from going out to vote in the next twenty minutes, because there are a lot of state propositions on the ballot, not just the presidency!

We don't have that problem in Canada...No news until all the polls have closed...The reasoning is that it can affect the votes in the later time zones.... The good part is that we know the winner usually within an hour after the last poll closes.

A week, 4 days, whichever. Trying to fit in the votes of 130 Million people in one day is just asking for trouble. And why does it matter that it all happens on one day? It's not required by the constitution. Imagine if all the votes were counted starting at 8PM EST across the country on Nov. 4th (because all the votes were cast and all the polls closed). We'd know who was POTUS by 9.
