what is so bad about making it a requirement to help others?! especially directed to all you christian wing nuts - you and your children already volunteer and help the needy, right? (you should if you don't!)
now you will get an extra incentive for it besides Jesus's love...
Seems like a moot point now that they changed the wording. Took the air out of a good argument, kill joys.
Why is this such a big deal? Guess what I did for my community service hours. I volunteered at a boys and girls club! Wow what a bother. I had to endure checking out pool sticks and moncala. I know not everyone will get to hangout at a boys and girls club, but seriously it’s not that bad. The people who sit around and complain about community service are the ones doing all the cleaning. As for the liberal, conservative, and blah blah blah there is no party that doesn’t believe in helping out your community and if they don’t then why are you in it. I’m bored and this is getting a little benighted.
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before (I'm not going to go back and read 27 pages of posts), but it seems that the wording has changed to 'encourage' high school students and provide a $4000 credit for college students. That's not nearly as bad as requiring community service for graduation. Now, it's still a terrible precedent to set, and could certainly lead to requirements down the line, not to mention quite a waste of taxpayer's money. It reeks of social engineering and the legislation of morality, which no matter how many examples you can site in the past or elsewhere in government, is wrong (the whole, "if everybody jumped off a bridge, would you?" argument).
I've posted this before - they have required Community Service to graduate from my old HS for well over 20 years now. I think it was a great thing. We did a midnight run and served food to the homeless, others volunteered at the local hospital or nursing home.
While I think community service is a good thing and should be done by all I also firmly believe you can not and should not force charity. Charity by it's definition should be given freely to whom you want IF you want.
We're talking about college costs and finding ways for our kids to afford a college education so that we are not academically left on the dust by other countries!!
Stop- spending moeny on worthless degrees that are noit needed and whcih don't even allow the person to eran a decent living. But as sated communtiy service would not be bad except taht most progrmas like thsi for summer youth employment have them sitting around doing nothing really. If you look at them the governamnt so resticks what they can do that they can't veen work outside in the summer because its too hot. Regular workers have to do that type of work.

Perhaps we need a universal draft for all residents, citizens or not, that required service between high school and college but not necessarily in the military. For instance our park systems need cleaning and repair, our new UHC system will need clerks and all sorts of other jobs need doing.
We all need translations of the missives of the man without a grammar book or a spell checker. Don't worry, you aren't missing much.

Certainly nothing wrong with encouraging and is a noble cause however requiring is truly beyond belief.
neither I nor my daughter shall ever participate in this socialist endeavor.
