Yes, I voted for Obama. And YES, I'm still very enthusiastic about his success in the election.

But I have to say, I think Mitt Romney is well spoken, intelligent, and would be a great face for the remnants of the Republican Party. For the life of me I can't understand how McCain beat him in the primaries and even worse, that he was standing at McCain's shoulder and was surpassed at the VP candidate in favor of that dimwitt from Alaska.

I guess I should be thankful since Obama won the election, but I can't understand how Romney wasn't more successful.

Romney is a Mormon and Mormons scare evangelical Christians ... all this gold plates and top hats and magic underwear ... he doesn't appeal to social conservatives because he's a finger in the air kind of guy. He'd be a terrific treasury secretary IMHO, but he'll never be a president.

The future of the GOP is to get Mike Steele to be in charge of it. He'll weed out the dumb bible thumpers and the moderates. The grand experiment of the big tent failed.

Thank you and good night.

I'm not arguing Domergirl- and I think the mormon issue would concern some people. But honestly, three or four years ago, who ever would have believed that America would elect a half black man of African heritage named Obama?

I don't know that being Mormon is a deal breaker- and as I understand it, he doesn't wave his religion like a flag. If what little I've seen of him is really who he is, he could bring alot to the table for his party.

I supported Romney.

Romney would have been the nominee had it not been for Huckabee, the darling of the evangelical community. I like Huckabee in principle but I realize his ideas would never work in this country. Mitt Romney was also a true conservative, while McCain really didn't differ from Obama on a lot of issues. Romney would have run a much better campaign and maybe could have won.

But many of my friends would not vote for him just because he was a Mormon. Quite sad, since we are electing President of the United States and not senior pastor.

McCain beat Romney largely because the Religious Right was opposed to a Mormon - they consider it to be a 'cult' religion...

Well, before JFK was elected it was believed he could not carry the Bible Belt region of the South (he was Catholic). But somehow he did. That more or less proves that Southerners will vote out of normal lines if a worthy candidate presents itself.

I thought Romney was winning the primaries, but I guess not. What states did McCain carry anyways? Anyone have a primaries reference map

I agree that some Mormons are scary- I'm not crazy about their hand in prop 8 in California.

But the same can be said of certain Christian groups and other religious sects.

But some of those "certain Christian groups" tend to be intolerant of anyone who thinks or prays differently than they do.

I suppose that is why I tend to vote Democrat.

The future of the GOP is to be discussed incessantly until they become something other than what they are. You still won't approve of them.
