What a day. So many highs and lows. (I was exhausted by the end of the day. How President and Mrs. Obama went on late into the night and then showed up this morning for church was just astounding!)
Reflecting on yesterday's events, I remain moved by the "Simple Gifts" quartet arranged by John Williams, so heartbreakingly lovely and so beautifully played by Perlman, Ma, and the two young people on clarinet and piano.
Such a stirring reminder of our spiritual history. Such a dynamic contemporary update and arrangement. Such a celebratorily diverse group of musicians: the nobility of Perlman (now rapidly aging), the majesty of Yo-Yo Ma at the peak of his talents, the dazzling young clarinetist McGill, and the smooth and delicate work of Gabriela Montero at the piano... I admit that I was was moved to tears.

Beautifully written, and thanks for the link. Too funny about exhaustion--I was wiped out by the time they got to the parade, and I was just watching at home. I guess going to ten balls was a way to work off nervous energy since he couldn't go to the gym that day. But it would have wiped me out.
I thought it was beautiful and was amazed at how on-key it sounded considering how cold it was that day. Instruments (particularly the metal components) don't usually play as well in the cold.

It was lovely.
A friend pointed out to me that Ms. Montero wore gloves.
