Check out the chart ( GOP red) and the trend over the last 6 years of those identifying themselves as Republicans. Almost gives one hope they might disappear entirely one day.

Kinda like a dormant virus (heh,heh...), given the right set of conditions it will come back and spread with a vengeance.

Be careful what you pray for. I'd rather see them weak than see them disappear completely. We'll always have a 2-party system, if they self-destruct you may really hate the party that takes their place.

At the rate the Neocons are declaring other people to be Republican In Name Only in a few years there'll only a few thousand of them and a few millions of RINO's. Being in power kind of made them behave themselves, but now they're at it like a house afire. At least we get to keep the name "Republican", which is the part that had me worried. Makes me proud to be a RINO. (getting all misty)

They're just trying to weed out the imposters and make room for the REAL republicans to grow.

I would rather see the Libertarian Party take their place.

The Republican Party has developed a bipolar disorder. About one third of the party is the very wealthy core of corporate managers, old money investors and not just a few speculators. Their principal concern is to keep government military spending increasing and upper level tax rates effectively low. Most do not care about any religion except unrestrained Mammon worship. They were known as the Rockefeller Republicans.

About two thirds of the modern Republican Party is derived from the southern stock of white redneck bible thumpers inherited from the Southern Democrats after Johnson decided to make the Democratic Party a truly national party and betrayed Dixie by signing the Voter Rights Act. This generation of good ol’ boys has never, and never will, forgive the Democrats for betraying their positions of political and legal power in the south. This set of disgruntled people have attracted the fundamentalist religious extremists, the gun nuts, the misogynists and an entire weird collection other wise politically impotent and frustrated no hopers.

This coalition is falling apart. I expect the “real” wealthy Republicans to reform the GOP under the same name with a greater focus on fooling enough conservative Democrats to let the plutocrats return to power. It will take years for this to happen because it will take years for the middle class to return to the relative prosperity they had under Kennedy.

The rest of the fanatics will follow Bush into obscurity as they splinter into different factions and stop talking to each other. The gun nuts (BTW - I am one) have already splintered into the Hunter/government must conserve the land group and the Self Defense factions. Pretty soon the fundamentalist Baptists will not talk with the Mormons (already happening) or the rest of the Protestant clan. I expect them to join the various factions of the Libertarian Party into political irrelevancy. The misogynistic anti-female faction will continue to preach the “natural” inferiority of the tribe of Eve to fewer and fewer Eves. I expect more and more women will had these guys a jar of Vaseline and walk out the door.

The Republicans made this bed so now they must live in it. Welcome to the future you thought would never happen.

Lets look at some history.

The Republicans took control after Johnson and his dissatisfying administration.

They lost it on Watergate.

Gained it back after the Carter disaster.

Lost it when Bush senior raised taxes.

Gained it after 8 long years of Clinton.

Lost power after all the spending of the last eight years.

When single parties gain to much control they tend to mess up and the other party is their to fill the vacuum.

As much as the troll who started this thread wants the Republicans to die off it won't happen in their life time.
