I can tell you that when I lived in Maryland the system was better than here in Tennessee. First of all, I actually registered and declared a particular party in Maryland. Not so in Tennessee. Second, here in Tennessee they just compare your signature that you sign on the day you vote to the one when you registered. No ID shown. I was appalled.
Laura, that is even better than in NM. All we had to do was sign our name next to our registration in the book..That was it!!!

OK, here's one where I am more in tune with the conservatives. My daughter went to college in MN, which has same-day registration. DD voted absentee in Colorado her entire four years there. However, she could have regisitered on Election Day in MN, and voted there, too, at least once. I guess the procedure is they give you a "provisional ballot", but I don't know how hard they check if you are registered in another state. In these days of computers, that should be easy.
When MN Sen. Paul Wellstone was killed shortly before the election, his name was still on the ballot. Campus Democrat groups were urging students to go to the polls and register that day to vote for him. Apparently, if he had won, his replacement would have had to be a Dem.
