Is there any election rule that says a Presidential candidate has to pick his/her running mate after the primaries?
If not, how would you feel about a Pres/VP team hitting Iowa and New Hampshire and campaigning together as a single ticket during all of the primaries?
Think about it. The first demonstration of the potential President's decision making ability is picking a VP running mate.
The incumbent President, who has only served one term, always has the advantage of having voters know "this is the package you get." But, what's stopping the challengers from running as teams in their party's primaries? They can also cover more territory as one hits the road in one state and the other hits the road in another (if they choose to campaign that way).
A drawback is the person running for President who wins in the primaries would not be able to select another person running for President as his VP. On the other hand, we vote for our party presidential candidates in the primary and get stuck with the running mate, now. Wouldn't you rather vote for the team up front?
I thni taht would elminate many candidates that were running as presdiental canidate themselves. That is when the presidental candidate decides who will help the ticketKennedy might not have won without Johnson for example.
