Too bad "generic republican' is not running, but rather, actual human candidates who often deviate quite far from what a voter's idea of 'generic republican' ought to stand for.

This works the same way for 'generic democrat' as well.

Will the republicans pick up seats this fall? Absolutely, that is how it usually works (the opposition party often picks up seats in a midterm election), but you have to be a bit careful with these 'generic republican' or 'generic democrat' type polls as people often insert their own values onto whatever 'generic politician' is running against someone they don't like. when the actual politician appears and not the 'generic ideal', sometimes the results can be quite a bit different.

I agree. Bill Clinton cleared the room pretty fast but Obama seems to want a fire drill.
