Maybe it's just my perception but all the high school set movies/TV shows seem most common in the 80s -- I'm talking the type like the Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles etc. and TV shows like Saved by the Bell etc. I'm sure there are plenty more examples you can think of.

These types of movies and shows (movies especially) about the ups and downs of trying to make it in the high school "society", with it's trials and tribulations seem less common now. Was there a reason why they were really common/popular in the '80s in particular?

I can't think as much shows that have the same kind of high school vibe now -- even the modern movies and shows set in high school don't have the same kind of high school setting with the subcultures/drama or that feel that I can put my finger on (maybe it's just me; perhaps it's just hindsight or that I don't watch TV as much now).

I don't think they have wide enough of an appeal. Movie makers always take into account the international market these days. Let's face it, someone in Germany probably isn't going to find Porky's all that funny if they even understand it.

As far as TV, Disney Channel seems to have plenty of shows set in school. That's judging from the commercials I see during Avengers: EMH.

Its a matter of follow the leader. Same reason for the rash of "Crime Drama" shows starting in the mid 90's, or all this reality BS, or the shows like "American Idol".

Someone comes out with something that seems to work, and then everyone jumps on the "formula" plays it out, and then something else comes along.

Man, the 80's & 90's were so great for teen movies and tv shows. I still get a kick out of it.

All the teen shows on now are about rich and annoying plastic puppet people...

I'm not feeling that, at all.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Jersey Shore on the top of the list?

Such things go in phases. I mentioned to my husband just the other night that TV hasn't featured a good western series in many decades. I'm ready for one. I'm ready for just about anything to replace these imbecile reality shows.

Good question. I don't know.

To me, the epitome of this genre is "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

If one didn't grow up in coastal Southern California, I wonder if people around the country, and the world, would find this funny. The Jeff Spicoli character was a REAL fixture in SoCal HS society.
