There were 2 cities I had seen way too many times in the media and thought "ho hum:" Paris and Venice. When you are physically there, they are larger than life ... and impressive.

Paris? Come on. The view from the Eiffel Tower toward the Trocadero Fountains, the grounds around Les Invalides, the unique feeling of the Arc de Triomphe and Champs d'Elysees, the stateliness of Place de la Concorde, and the postcard quality of Ile-de-la-Cite and Montmartre are pretty stunning. Then, have you ever visited Versailles, and the extensive gardens, in the fall when the leaves are changing color? It makes for a lasting impression.

I don't know about romantic. But beautiful and majestic, yes!

I agree robertpolyglot not everything is bad in my native city (and I can show you around places you've never visited , known only to native Partisians, if ever you combe back visit one day). Still, I'm fed up being dismissed as being "anti Parisian " , did you see the pictures above ? ain't they "nice" ? that's also the reality of Paris, and I live among that garbage and that ****. I'm not "ranting", I'm just trying to convey how is the day to day reality for the average Parisian (not the wealthy, privileged one). Do you get it ?

Yes. I know about that crap. There was a story of a naive free-spirited 21 y.o. kid from a rural part of Oregon who ended up in Roissy, was relaxing in a park or public space with his backpack, and was killed. The vast graffiti-clad housing projects in Rome are also an eye-opener, and nothing like the "Eternal City" one romanticizes. You're preaching to the choir. However, this thread is about tourism and experiences while traveling. I'm sure the negative experiences occurred at tourist attractions in the city, and largely because of cultural differences which couldn't easily be bridged.

When I was in Paris, the only 2 tourist things I did were the eiffel tower and the louvre (and then just for the Mona Lisa-spent like 2 hours ) .

The rest of my trip, I spent in and out of cafes, restaurants, bars, bakeries, clubs, boutiques, the various parks. I had a fantastic time and begin to think how the hell I could get myself to live in that city.

As to the tourist things...meh....I crossed them off my bucket list.

I can see how many American tourists wouldn't like it. It's one destination after the other, like they're employed by the travel channel. I never got that style of seeing cities. I like to get to know the people, not the attractions.

Paris in the spring with a girl and some money is about the most surreal beauty you can experience in the world

pigeonhole, we can post the same type of photos for every city in the world.
We get it, you hate Paris.

My question is: why not move from Paris if you hate it so much?
