On Sunday, Moscow swallowed up two nearby cities, 19 residential areas and more than 230,000 people as it more than doubled its official size. The city is about 150,000 hectares larger as of Sunday, July 1 and with a total population of about 11.2 million. That expansion was made official this week, with the city's footprint growing from 109,100 to 253,100 hectares – a jump from roughly 421 to 977 square miles. That's like taking the cities of New York and New Orleans and adding on the city of Los Angeles.

Annexations are always interesting to me.

The year is 2012, not 199x The idea of mega-cities is questionable, but has nothing to do with mafia.

I guess, it is a good move in order to improve the development of the metropolitan area, and reduce congestion in the city center. The new land around Moscow will be used for residential construction and improve living standards and decongest the capital’s overcrowded roads. I heard that there was a plan to relocate the headquarters of state officials outside the capital.

Municipal annexation is also done in the US and other countries. Annexation helps ensure consistent and unified level of urban service.

Some people believe it would be wiser to annex territories on the North not on the South of Moscow, because we have now an Intercity-Express train called "Sapsan" from Moscow to Petersburg. But there were no public discussions on this topic, alas. Still, in recent years our government built several new undeground stations and they are going to build more, maybe even the second circular line. It's good.

So much money will be poured into that new development that transportation expense doesn't really matter - they may open a dozen bullet train routes, if need be, even supersonic trains that Russian Railroad develops.

The question is - why in the world build mega-cities? The government's take is understandable - higher density, higher income. But what about the quality of life?

P.S. This is not a natural annexation, but a part of a government's plan of creating a few mega-cities, to keep up with it's promises of a doubled average income.

Spending half a trillion bucks on one city's ring road is absolutely not good! Moscovites should really begin to comprehend that Moscow doesn't equal Russia, but is just a part of it

The second circular line in Moscow underground is inevitable. Amen.

Russian Joke: russians will live so well, as in Moscow, when borders of Moscow will coincide with borders of Russia
