"It's not Eastern Europe, it's Central Europe!" = "I'm not Mexican, I'm Hispanic!"
Central Europe is not only a geographical designation, there are several ways this formula is used and often it refers to the area of German cultural domination that spreads eastward up to Poland and Transylvania.
Now, about the condescension feelings of some Western people toward Eastern Europe, this is delusional, as Eastern Europe, more specifically the Balkans, was the craddle of oldest European civilisations (also where metallurgy, writing and other discoveries first appeared not only in Europe but in world history) and the place where even the name of Europe was born.
First of all here, in Czech Republic, we say we live in Central Europe. Culturally and historically we are connected with Austria and Germany that means we are part of "the West". Linguistically we are slavic people and that probably means "the East". It is not easy to decide that. From my perspective I would say "the west" because history, culture, traditions are more important than language.
All my life I thought I lived in Central Europe (Poland) because thats what Poles and media in Poland look at it, until i moved to UK 6 years ago and learned that im "eastern" lol
