This week there was the 20th anniversary of the Strage di Capaci, a really sad moment of the history of the fight against sicilian Mafia. The 23th of May 1992 the judge and magistrate Giovanni Falcone, who devoted the most of his efforts to the fight against mafia, was killed by mafia with a large scale explosion, together with his wife and several escort agents. Few months later his colleague Paolo Borsellinomet the same destiny.
These are the most famous symbols of the battle against Mafia, but they surely are not the only ones. Many other people opposed mafia, and many of them were eventually killed as well.
I did all this extra-long introduction for introducing you the song which is usually associated with this theme, and that in occasion of anniversaries like this one it is easy to hear somewhere: "I cento passi" by the Modena City Ramblers.
This is about another mafia victim, Peppino Impastato, who strongly opposed Mafia even if his own family was strongly involved with the organisation. "I cento passi" means "100 steps", which was the distance between his house and the one of the closest mafia boss. The spoken parts of the song are taken from the namesake movie. The written part that you see in the video doesn't say much more than the wikipedia page.
