Portugal, although mainly the coastal areas, is very popular with the British for holidays and also moving there to work or to retire.
It's a very poor country- has the highest poverty levels of any western European country- and like other European countries it's not getting any better unfortunately. Beautiful country.
I would put it this way, it is a relatively poor country, by European standards at least. Still, I think most foreigners have the wrong image of this country.
I was working in Lisbon last year and I absolutely loved it, I knew the city previously but even working and having less free time I enjoyed a lot my time there. People is nice, food awesome and atmosphere even better:
If you go don't forget to:
Have a coffee in a terrace.
Visit Sintra and its castles and palaces.
Cascais!!
Praia do Guincho, one of the best in Europe!!! (cold water by the way)
Have some Bacalhau! (cod)
Try the espetadas (meat in a kebab)
Torre de Belem
Pasteis de Belem!!! cream cakes with cinnamon, yummy!!
Rossio Station.
Sights from Bairro Alto.
etc
Nice list.
