The European left has a strange tenderness toward Islam and I find it baffling. For one, Islam is the antithesis of liberal principles. On issues such as gay rights, women's rights, democracy, religious freedom etc, etc, etc. So we leftest promoting gay rights why simultaneously defending groups that violently discriminate against the gay community. How does that make any sense?

Case in Point:
We have Jeremy Corbyn meeting with Hamas and Hezbollah. Then calling Sheikh Raed Salah an "honored citizen". Even though the man is an absolute theocratic cretin.

The nonstop apologist pieces in left leaning publications such as the Guardian for every atrocity committed by Islamic extremists.

What is happening with Europe's left? Is this a byproduct of the "Frankfurt School". Does the left hope that the destruction of western culture will allow it to be rebuilt along a Marxist narrative?

I don't think that "European left" has any particular tenderness for Islam - they simply underestimate its destructive potential.
It's more interesting when American "right" has no particular problems with Islam, calling it officially "a religion of peace, hijacked by extremists."

The Left and Islam have some common goals, since both strive to enforce different totalitarian systems.

It's an 'unholy alliance' of the so-called Liberals and the most illiberal ideology; Islam.

What "totalitarian system" "European left" is trying to enforce I wonder?

The love relationship between European left and Islam is less made of love than interest. With the end of transformation industries, commonly known as factories, leftist ideologies such as marxism started lacking an audience. Typically these parties often calling-themselves "worker's parties" had in reality little appeal to real blue-collar workers and most of its followers were professors and other intellectuals. The shrinking proletariat had in the meantime massively moved to right or far-right parties.

It's not so much Islam that they are keen on, but mostly Muslim immigrants who due to their massive numbers and access to voting has become a political market for lefties. Left parties started to court and cater to that niche with hopes of gaining their votes as a second intention. This friendliness is certainly not out of moral conviction or sympathy towards the principles of Islam, nor towards the immigrants population themselves, it is politics plain and simple.

But it is interesting to note that it hasn't always been that way. Around the WWII days Islam was linked to Fascism and Nazism, Hitler himself visited Palestinian Muslim leaders.

Not even close to the tenderness the US government, both parties, give towards Islam, US presidents basically bow down and pay homage to the Saudi Arabian dictators, send troops in to protect the Kuwaiti dictatorship, and are silent on any actions they do. The US took out the anti-radical Islam Iraqi dictatorship and replaced it with a not quite but close radical Islamic government, and now the US supports Islamic radicals to overthrow a much more moderate Syrian government, not too mention the radical elements across north Africa. The US supported radical Islam during the Soviet-Afghan war.

So the European left has nothing on the US government in its love affair with not only Islam, but radical Islam.

Marxism, Communism, or as some like to call it 'Big Government'. The Islamic counterpart would be Sharia Law.

"Marxism and Communism" - that's extremities that Russians took on because of their own internal reasons.
You won't find anything like that in the rest of Europe for long-long time already.

The American Right hates Islam actually; it's an integral part of their rhetoric
