Paris' status in Continental Europe....basically, #1 without competitor? Or would some disagree?
I always think of PARIS as way up there, equal with (this debatable list), but New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong.
Which, by default, puts it at a status way above anywhere else in continental Europe. Status meaning just a major powerhouse of a city for the continent in every conceivable way.
Would that status be worthy of Paris? Or would some disagree, or place another city in a similar league that is also in continental Europe?
Paris is inhabited by the French which by definition means it is not number one and never will be. Let's see what else we have in western Europe: Barcelona, Milan, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Oslo, Stockholm and on and on and on.

I always thought that London's and Paris' #1 slot was quite arbitrary. Besides some economic figures they aren't that different (or superior for that matter) from other major cities in Europe or the world.

Antwerp? How can you compare Antwerp and Paris on any level?

Paris has more tourists than most other major cities, if not the most in the world. It is a very pretty place when the sun is shining
Now if for some reason tourism dried up in Paris..... I'm not sure how well the city could cope. The non touristy parts of Paris are slums.
I know somewhere like SF has tourism AND tech. London has banking, tech etc, but again without tourism the city would hurt.
That is a harsh truth that is hard for the locals to admit sometimes
Continental Europe may refer to mainland Europe or the Continent of Europe. In terms of the former the UK and London would not be included but would be included in the latter. So you need to clearly define what you mean by Continental Europe.
It should also be noted that Moscow is part of the Continent of Europe.
It should be noted that Paris generally only includes the city centre in many statistical charts, if Greater Paris is included the city is a similar size to Greater London.
