It's a small country unrecognize by other nation who are in the border of moldavia.
The inhabitants of the region are from various roots, there are moldavians, ukrainians, russians, poles, gagouzes and other.
I'am curious about it.
Does some of you know the situation between the people there? Are there a big genetic differences? Does each culture influence the other in this region?
It is de facto a dependency of Russia, like Abkhazia, south Ossetia, and the Donetsk and Lugansk republics in eastern Ukraine. If I was the Russian leaders, I would fully integrate them in the Russian Federation, since it is overwhelmingly the wish of the locals. But the international polics start to meddle , and complicate things that are so obviouds a 5 - year old child could understand. It is called the selfdetermination of the people.

It's also called Moscow meddling in the affairs of foreign nations. Why should Moldova give up part of its territory? That's not what Moldovans want. Only Russians living in the contested area want to break away. Maybe Russia should encourage Brighton Beach in NYC and the Richmond District in San Francisco to break away from the US? Should China claim Chinatowns around the US as their own? Should Mexico encourage Southern California and New Mexico to breakaway from the US and join their brethren as part of Mexico?
Can you tell me how appeared Russian population between Romania and Ukraine, at hundreds of km distance of Russian territory?
The presence of Russians here is only a witness of the regretable colonialist history of Russian empire and then soviet union. Occupying others' land, colonising your people there and then claiming that your colonists should be allowed to decide the fate of the territory is not just. Especially when there still is a sizeable population of the natives (Romanians and Ukrainians) there.
In my opinion, this territory should be returned to Ukraine, but only after Ukraine returns the Budjak (the south of Bessarabia) and Northern Bukovina (province of Cernăuți) to Romania. The Dniester should be the border between Romania and Ukraine on most of its lenght, as was between 1918-1940.

What i read about it, the place have always been occupy by ukrainians and moldavians. Russians came (i don't know in which proportion) 200 years ago. It's not really recent.
It's a old multicultural place, can we imagine the different community have mix during the years? Or the community stay close to the other? And they have a kind of culture in common?
What Russia needs to do is respect the territorial integrity of other countries and abide by international law. Wouldn't that be revolutionary? If Russians in Moldova don't want to be there, and Russia is so concerned about their welfare, Russia can offer them apartments and jobs in Russia.

According to Wikipedia, there are very few if any Romanians living in those territories.
