A small part of me thinks it is probably the conservative American media trying to portray the 'extremes of how liberals go'....so therefore they can do some fear tactics on the American swing voters, particularly since this news was dated around the election of 2008, etc.
It is legal in Denmark. More accurately, it's not illegal.
They formally outlawed it earlier this year because of all the bad press they received after police found some (one?) animal brothels.
It wasn't even legal before that since there were other laws protecting animals from abuse. There just wasn't one that explicitly said "Thou shall not have sex with a goat!".

OK, it used to legal (not a crime) to have sex with animals, at least dogs. But it has been recently criminalized, after much protest from animal rights organizations.
