With the near-total collapse of the once-powerful Roman Catholic Church in Ireland, I wonder if the Irish are giving their history a second look, wondering how much of what they learned is true and what has been omitted. For example, are people once regarded as Irish heroes now considered villains? After all, the Church didn't operate in a vacuum. Its sins were abetted by people in politics and law enforcement.
How bad were the Irish treated under British rule? I know they didn't get home rule and the potato famine. But how did it compare to British India, Africa, or southeast asia. Were they truly oppressed, civil and human rights violated or did the irish just like to fight?

The British government let over a million people starve to death, all while food was still being exported from Ireland to Britain, and you're asking if the Irish just liked to fight?
