I don't think Hungary, Czech republic and Poland are boring.
I actually find the UK much more boring than those places because unlike those parts of Europe, the UK is ridden with laws dictating every single step you take, and with an intrusive government minding everyone's private lives making sure everyone plays nice. Let's not even mention the horrifying weather that eventually turns you either suicidal or sick because of lack of vitamin D.
Other countries worth mentioning because of how sterile they feel it's Germany and Austria. Austria is so clean, safe, organized, sterile and boring, I feel like I am on the actual movie set of the sound of music and not on an actual country.
As far as Germany, well Cologne is supposedly their crazy city and Cologne is a sleepy town with barely anything to do after a week spent there, that should tell you how exciting the rest of Germany is.
What is so 'horrifying' about the weather exactly? Particularly compared to Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland!!
Hungary has the 16th highest incidents of suicide in the world (19.1 per 100,000 pop).
I don't understand why its higher than the States. If I'm not mistaken, people frequently use a firearm to commit suicide and there's much less firearms in Hungary than the States.

The most common method of suicide in Finland is hanging for men and poisoning for women. Only 35% of the suicides are committed by firearm. And we have 1.5 million guns in this small country. The suicidal persons who have lost all hope just don't have access to firearms.

In a Spain, there's a place called Alacant, near Chilles, in which many men poisoned themselves very frequently with RATIL. It turned out that men were poisoned slowly by their wifes during years. Women from that location are famous for that activity.
France, of all places, rates especially high among the European countries, for suicide. What's with the French?
I think it's has to do with mentality, culture and gender equality. France, Belgium, Finland and Iceland have similar suicide rates among both sexes, but for example Poland, Estonia and Russia have much higher suicide rates among men than the former 4 mentioned, but a lot less rates among women. Sweden has the same rate of women committing suicide as Finland, but among men it's much lower.
I don't know why France and Belgium has high suicide rates, but I know why Finland has. We are a culture of high honour. Not honour like in Japan or Korea, but the ethos or men being strong independent freemen who do a lot and talk little. A bit of a 'frontier' mentality. Ok, all the other Nordics have the same mentality as already the Vikings had it, but maybe the others went forward before us.
And a part of it is the experience of WWII. We had 530,000 men in arms and experienced the war way different than our Western neighbours. And how we dealt with the scarred men suffering from PTSD or any stress of the war was awful. They were completely wiped under the mat and ignored, after all, men are strong and suffering from mental problems is cowardice. And these men taught their children the same 'culture', hiding your feelings though you feel terrible inside. It wasn't before the mid 80's when the stigma of men going to therapy was lifted. Before that, the only therapy you could go to was the sauna with your friends or the bottle.
To add, this WWII generation taught their next generation that alcohol abuse is ok, after all, everybody knew that the reasons for it was the horrors of the war. We still suffer from this today, as seeing an alcoholic on the street doesn't raise any eyebrows. They are merely a feature of city life, rehab is a joke in this country, and mostly we just accept the poor outcast souls perishing with their own rate. Also, why Finland has an average than higher murder rate in Western Europe is because of this. Alcoholics in delirium killing their drinking buddy, girl/boyfriend or whatever.
Secondly, the Finnish Army widely issued a German drug called Pervitin, which in fact was methamphetamine, a substance which anyone knew little about at the time. Though it had been discontinued in the 1910's, during the war heroin was introduced in military cough medicine, and as the effects were 'good', meth and heroin were given to almost any ache. Estimates say that 250 million pills containing either methamphetamine or heroin was given to the troops during WWII. That is almost 500 pills a soldier. Air crews were banned from using any substances, but anyone else were handed or could ask for some. The Finnish Army and Navy probably used more drugs per soldier than any other military in WWII. When the war ended and the supply with it, we had a lot of junkies who couldn't get anymore the substance they were addicted to, they had to turn to alcohol when heroin was finally banned. Even the WHO questioned Finland why we use per capita a lot more of meth and heroin than any other Western country. Our reply was: "due to the climate and flu". Completely ignoring everything.
So, long story short to summarise all this, a complex use of other substances, ignoring the problem of alcoholism, twisted societal habits, poor rehabilitation and a silent culture of accepting this.
This is why we have a both higher than average suicide and murder rates, and it annoys me tremendously when people say "well it's because it's cold and cloudy", when the reasons are much more complex. Every suicide is a tragedy and these people using 10 seconds of their psychiological 'knowledge' and just say stupid things are a joke.
As an addition, Finland got the reputation of being especially suicide-prone country was during the early 90's financial crisis. Ok, you could say, but the 90's crisis affected us worse than the Wall Street Crash in 1929. People who lost everything in the US jumped off skyscrapers then, here they put themselves into the noose. After that the suicide rate has dropped consistently towards the European average.
As a second addition, the Finnish military pharmacies still create this stimulant, now called Stimulin or Stimulix, though with less amphetamine, but will be handed out freely if a war happens.
Never heard of Finland as suicide-prone, but Sweden yes.
It seems pretty common to assume that Nordic countries are all pretty suicide-prone, even though in reality their suicide rate is nothing special.
Korea and Japan...now that's awful.
