It depends if you are a couple or a family. As I said earlier, you receive more income if you have children.

Realistically though, any one person can't expect to get anymore than £1,000 a month.

Frankly, I have a hard time thinking of a more expensive country for an EU national to study in than England.

Interesting that in much of Europe it does not look like you can live on the dole from womb to tomb. Good for Europe!

Here in the US, there are millions who do exactly that. Their lives are ruined because the government has destroyed their motivation to do anything with themselves. We all know somebody who got out of the cycle, but most don't. Some years back, Newsweek interviewed a family near Boston that had cost the taxpayer over a million dollars. When the reporter asked them about it, they said that they didn't care as long as the gravy train kept rolling. Disgusting.

"section 8 (housing voucher)"- the lottery to be placed on the waiting list opens when the waiting list is empty, in most places this is about once every ten years, but you still have to win the lottery to be eligible to wait up to ten years for housing assistance

EBT (food stamps) - must have no more than $2000 in assets, ineligible if have ever been convicted of a crime, sliding scale assuming rent and ither expenses are very low

WIC - free peanut butter and cold cereal, can be sold on the black market for toilet paper, diapers and vegetables.

medicaid- provided your income is zero and you can find a medical provider who is accepting medicaid patients, they will cover a small selection of medical treatments.

poor Americans don't go without medical care - certain emergency rooms (yes, wait times are as bad as you think) are legally obliged to patch you up so you're not in immediate danger of death before they kick you out.
TANF has a 5 year life, but the work around is to pop kids out at steady interval so that they can keep it going and then their kids pop out more kids. Then the kids get the TANF money while everybody else works PT for cash.

Section 8 has the same work around and if your parents are on it, you just stay put in their place until they check out. It has become a birthright.

WIC pays for diapers, milk, formula and lots of other items. As you walk through the supermarket you see which items are WIC eligible. It's not just "peanut butter and cold cereal". More whiny drivel.

There's more Americans on EBT than the population of entire countries. 45+ million in 2014 and rising. Thank you Obama.

Medicaid pays for everything under the sun, from addiction and mental health to organ transplants. So much misinformation in this post.

Not certain ERs, but all ERs have to accept everybody who comes in. Due to competition, many ERs advertise their wait times in order to attact patients. Many times under 15 minutes, but definitely longer in the inner city. We went to the ER in the UK and it took forever there too.

Wow that's totally nothing ... even less than what poor people get here where welfare state doesn't exist.
