the only song i know from him is this one, but i don't know much else about him, i'd guess many people here at least know that song though. ah no, i also know this one too, but that's really it.
I've already heard these songs, and "Bongo Bong" named by J.Thomas too. For me these songs were in the category "foreign songs from unidentified singer, that for a short period are often on the radio/TV". I really didn't know the name of the singer.
He's a political "troubador" with a very nasty voice and style (just my personal opinion). He's the son or whatever of a famous Spanish communist that lives in Paris, Chao.
Of course, he is extremely famous. Mano negra was one of the leading bands of the famous "alternatif" movement in the late 80's in France. In some ways, it was kind of the French Clash, mixing rock music with some latin influences. Then they toured in South America and became popular there, due to singing mostly in spanish (He is of spanish ancestry).
His solo albums in the late 90s and early 00s were extremely popular as well, but his songs have become unlistenable to me due to hearing them at any party for years.
Before Mano Negra he played in Hot Pants which was kind of a rockabilly band.
Manu Chao was known here a few years ago for his song "mi gusto tu". He sang in spanish and has done a latino pop with a "leftist vibe".
