Mediterranean cities like Barcelona, Nice, Marbella, Lisbon are known for its laid back culture , great weather, fantastic food and friendly people. So what's your favorite mediterranean city?
Actual Mediterranean cities lie rather on the southern side of the Mediterranean : from West to East, Malaga(or Marbella, sure), Valencia, Mallorca, Algiers, Naples, Palermo, Tunis,Tripoli, Athens, Izmir, Nicosia, Beyrouth, Tel Avviv, Alexandria. Nice and Barcelona are not typical mediterranean , far from it, for French and Catalan cultures are different from the true Mediterranean cultures. And the climate of both those cities is not pure Mediterranean , they have particular microclimates with some continental influence (Koppen classification is not the same, as, say, Palermo or Malta).
Catalan culture is Med, Barcelona was an ancient med republic, a mediterranean empire, so is Nice. Yes, having the Pyrinees and the Alps does influeence climate, but in Algiers they have the desert, etc. French culture could be considered in a very general way as Med, as we all come from Rome. France have some stunning Med towns and cities, Banyuls, Cannes and Marseilles.
Nice is Med, but as my hometown has been shaped by elite tourism during the last 150 years.
But yes, "modernity" has thoroughly destroyed everything med, look at Costa Brava, Maresme, Cambrils, "Costa dorada, blanca, del sol", a big disgrace.
Granada! I had amazing sea food by the beach, I did some shopping in alcaiceria, took pictures of Alhambra etc. I loved it and want to go back sometime in the near future.
Sevilla, Málaga, Granada, AlmerÃa, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Barcelona...
