I don't want to start a culture war here, stats, finger pointing, etc... I want to know from actual US citizens who live, or have lived in the inner cities, or suburbs of German cities with children. What is the contrast like, and how safe are the cities in Germany when it comes to allowing children out to play, or go to parks, ride public transit, school, etc., unaccompanied by an adult?

We are relocating to Germany this summer to either Frankfurt, or Cologne. We currently live in Houston, and we do shelter our children, we don't let them go out into the streets, parks, stores, alone for fear of their safety. We live in a neighborhood next to Downtown Houston (City Center). We've spent time in Germany as we visit at least every other year (wife is originally from Spain), and I do recall see young children seemingly alone, but not sure.

So we'd like to hear any comparisons so as to be prepared.

Thank you in advance.

No problem whatsoever.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Houston, but we used public transit as kids in the US and the UK from the time we were 9 or 10 years old. Crime rates today are far lower than back then.

You'll likely have no problems in Germany as most crime rates are lower there than in the US and while I can't tell you how to parent, sheltering kids is a disservice unless you're in a gangland type neighborhood. JMO.

OP, what's wrong with Houston, that you can't let your kids out on their own? Are you in a sketchy neighborhood, or bordering a bad neighborhood?

Crime goes down=less exciting
Crime goes up=more exciting

which makes Germany more exciting.

Baltimore, Camden, Detroit. Exciting perhaps, but not in a good way!
