Poland is a nice enough country at least in terms of living standards. If it wasn't for the low salaries the migration to the west would be near non-existent

Hypothetical. Years under Communist oppression can really demoralise a nation and its culture.

I'm not sure why the UK in particular is such a popular destination for them, it can't just be economics since they share a border with Germany.

I dont know either. Poland's emigration rate is quite high for whatever reason, there are much poorer countries out there which have much lower emigration rates. Don't know of a European example but Brazil is an impoverished country with an awful economy atm and a poor security situation, but has very very low emigration rates in comparison. Ireland has a very high emigration rate despite being developed and wealthy and having good salaries and being very peaceful

Some countries have a culture of emigration, Ireland is the obvious example. Some say that Ireland is quite boring for young people, with not really much excitement outside of Dublin, but I can't really speak for that. Perhaps it's just a part of the national psyche.

There about 800,000 Poles born in Poland living in the UK against about 700,000 people with dual Polish/German nationality and about 600,000 Poles with only Polish nationality living in Germany. All according to Wikipedia. I don't think that the UK is more attractive, but it has opened up much earlier to Polish and other eastern EU countries, i.e. directly after accession while most other countries had a seven year waiting time for protecting their own workforce from cheap labour, one of the reasons for the self-inflicted Brexit.

A costly political mistake for the UK. I remember the Labour government saying that only a few thousand would arrive

I also remember them saying that Iraq had WMDs...

^ Language too, no one will prefer German over English, this makes zero sense.

Also, Germany can leave the EU too...if they have so much poles, problem solved british style.

It has to be said that there's been an established Polish community in the UK since WWII, I assume that was also a factor.

Germany has neither the intention of leaving nor of making Poles the scapegoats for bad domestic policy.
