I know European governments help out when there are disasters in poorer parts of the world. Are there private, non-governmental charities where Europeans can donate money or time?

There are thousands of charities in the UK.

The Red Cross was founded by the Swiss, although most countries have their own branch, however the International Red Cross is stil based in Switzerland.

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in London by Methodist William Booth and has it's HQ in London.

Other British charities include St John Ambulance which has close links to the Order of St John and Knights Templar of the Indiana Jones and the De Vinci Code fame there is an Order of St John Museum in London, and of course famous international charitable organisations such as Oxfam (originally the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief) , Chrstian Aid, Save the Children etc.

In terms of the Red Cross the British Red Cross is seperate to the American Red Criss but all red cross and red crecsents come under the umbrella of the International Red Cross in Geneva in Switzerland.
