Yeah they're not big on Twinkies, Ho Ho's, Kraft mac and cheese, TV dinners, Taco Bell, Little Caesars Pizzas and McDonalds in Europe. I think in general American taste buds are weird from all the artificial crap.
Acquired taste. Once you get accustomed to highly processed food, real food could taste quite "funny" or even bad.
Some people never get a chance to eat quality food in their lives.
Ultra-processed foods make up about 58% of the average American’s energy intake.
All those artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, stabilizers, and other additives just mask "undesirable qualities" of the inferior food or (try to) make it taste like real food.
(Ultra-processed foods is defined as industrial formulations which, besides salt, sugar, oils and fats, include substances not used in culinary preparations, in particular additives used to imitate sensorial qualities of minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations.)
American travellers seeking American fast food in Europe often notice that it taste quite different there. That's because American food companies (everyone from Betty Crocker to Pringles to Quaker Oats) has to reformulate their products with safer ingredients overseas, while they continue to sell us inferior products with unhealthy ingredients here in the States.
Just as dumb a generalization as saying all food in the States is bad. Pay more when you go out to eat and you'll find something positive to say about the food on either continent.

This is exactly what I was thinking. OP must not have been able to afford even the mid-priced places.
I just thought that they have to be joking! We are leaving for the US next week and I am seriously concerned about sticking to a healthy diet. Whereas we are going to Europe later in the year and I am excited about what we will eat.
I have travelled extensively on both continents, but not often upmarket in the US. It is just too expensive for us, probably double the price of home. Whereas we can go quite upmarket in Italy and have truly memorable meals.
I’ve lived in Portugal and Spain for 6 months. I’ve gone all over the continent and tried different types of cuisines. But one thing I’ve noticed is that the food is significantly worse than in America. It might be more organic and with less preservatives, but that doesn’t equate t actual flavor.
