id love to visit russia , very expensive i believe however ?
IDK. My understanding is, that it's a lot cheaper than it used to be, because there are B & B options now, hostels, a variety of affordable accommodations. Of course, in Moscow, that's all very relative, as in San Francisco and NYC. But there's much more to Russia than Moscow. How old are you, bob? You could sign up to be a volunteer, building and maintaining the Lake Baikal trail. IDK what kind of accommodations they provide, but I assume it's free, in exchange for your volunteer labor. My niece did it, and had fun. Lake Baikal is beautiful. You can get a 2nd class train ticket to there, from Moscow. Or you could fly. But the train is an experience!

Depends on how you do it. If you want to eat in fancy restaurants and use 5 star hotels yes. If you do as Russians do then it's relatively cheap.
You need to know some Russian and it can get bewildering at times. Do your homework and it will not be a challenge so much as an adventure.
If you go to Ukraine be careful. It's a poorly run country but Ukrainians are great people. Last time I was there I was not impressed by much of it aside from the people.
The plan I have worked out now is going to cost me $2500 TOTAL for a week in Moscow. Visa and airfare included. I do have an unfair advantage having been there many times in the past. I know the Moscow Metro better than most Muskovites. I travel lite and look for ways to save and I know how to do it. I don't spend $50 for a cab to get to Rechnoy Metro Station from Shremetyevo Airport. I spend $2 on the bus and accomplish the same thing.

I remember when they were $100. Is that their cheapest rate? That used to be their "rush" rate. But I guess they're just keeping up with what the Americans are charging Russian citizens...
Because the US charges roughly that amount, so Russia has followed suit. It used to be very cheap, once upon a time, but the US raised its rates, and treated Russian applicants rudely in the embassies/consulates, so Russia got fed up, and reciprocated.
