I'm older and recently was chastised by a young friend (French) for referring to myself as a "Ric." She said it wasn't pejorative as much as it's dated. So what slang word can I use? "Étasunien?"

Thanks!

Why not refer to yourself as just good old "American" and the heck with the desire to use the right kind of slang?
Aren't you trying too hard to fit in?

See response above this one… with no explanation offered

You’re right, of course, but sometimes, depending on the internet company you keep, you have to take special care not to sound as if you’re chauvinist. Plus, I’ve been calling myself Ricain since forever and want to know if I should be embarrassed

I’m not familiar with the term, but I looked into it and wouldn’t it pretty much be equivalent to gringo?

I never heard that. Thank you. But (pejorative equivalence to “gringo” aside; I’m not Latina) I personally don’t mind calling myself something slightly stereotypical, and I always thought that the song “Ricain” wasn’t… evil.

Ricain isn't much used indeed and I'm afraid there isn't a widely used slang term for "américain".

I watched the Zemmour rally this afternoon from beginning to end and just heard "américain" once. Thank you for taking the time to help. But can I ask if the French still have nicknames for the British ("rosbifs")? For anyone? My friend told me that Reddit's France forum moderators call themselves and their French subscribers "grenouilles."

Per WordReference forums (stuffy grammar-guru site), amerloque is in use but more pejorative than ricain. But thanks!
