Does walking 6-7 kms a day (5 miles) equal running the same distance? If not, what distance would it equal to (2? 3 miles?) I have noticed weight loss and trimming of my body walking for 2 months, not necessarily changing my diet.

Google calorie calculators and put in your numbers. Here's one:

Typically you will burn more calories running even taking the lesser time spent into account. For instance for me walking at 3 mph I get about 460 calories for 5 mi. Running at say 7 mph for 5 mi I get about 680 calories burned.

Do you think walking 5 miles slow uses the same amount of energy as walking 5 miles fast?

The answer is no.

For most people running will use more energy than walking the same distance. Running is more tiring than walking. Your heart rate will be higher. More oxygen consumed. Walking fast can be a very good exercise and is easier for those where their joints hurt.

Running burns more total calories, but walking should in theory burn a higher pct of fat, because it is lower in intensity.

Walking to me is much more boring and tiresome than running, although that's probably just my personal quirk. I noticed that when I walked to the post office, approx 2 miles of walking, it seemed like a monumental task. But when I jogged there and back it took about half the time and seemed like nothing.

Depends on your heart rate...wutitiz is correct. Ruck marching is also terrible.

Generally speaking, walking (fast, not lollygagging) and running the same distance, will burn the same amount of calories, or very close to it. Use a heart rate monitor and you can check it yourself. I burn slightly more running, but not enough to matter. For me it's all about the time consumed.

Your aren't burning fat. You are burning calories. No exercise will burn more fat than another, give the same calorie burn. A calorie is a calorie.

I would suggest you buy a heart rate monitor.

If you have back issues, you should swim or do fast walking. Running is very jarring to the back, not to mention ankles, knees, even with good shoes.

I don't think this is true. I admit I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous, but I've read from several independent sources that long, slow, endurance activity tends to burn a higher pct of fat (as opposed to glycogen).
Team Oregon Tip

In my personal experience this is true as well. When I'm training for a marathon and doing long slow running, my weight tends to go down. When I'm training for 5Ks, with high intensity speedwork, weight does not go down so much.
