to the OP, are you overweight? here is what i would recommend. cut down your caloric intake until you have reached your desired wait. then come back and we will discuss exercises to do.
That is not very good advice. ANY exercise is better than no exercise.
Ask your friends if they have, or know someone who has, some exercise equipment they don't want. I did this and got so many pieces that I finally had to start turning down offers. Now have a whole room full, and use that instead of a gym.
im not sure what you consider "hardcore." i go to the gym 5 days a week and i could count on one hand the amount of people id say are "hardcore." of course, most people in gyms are overweight and doing nothing; but you dont have to be "hardcore" to get in shape.
Hardcore I guess to me would be things that would put more pressure on my knees and hips to the point I'd be hurting so much I couldn't exercise. I suppose some examples would be running more than a short distance, squats and lunges with weights, or some of the leg machines in a gym with considerable weight.
My past experience is that some of the classes or even plans designed by a trainer don't really acommadate me in that respect. I guess, perhaps I didn't phrase my post correctly, but that would even mean things like DVDs etc.
While I've probably lost a lot of the upper body strength I once had, usually don't have those same problems of soreness/pain working out my upper body.
I was hit by a car when I was a child. There were no fractures that I was aware of. But I attribute my hip/knee pain in part to that because it was on the same side as what the car hit me on. Even had it when I was a teenager and I would run. Of course then I could run a couple miles without it debilitating me, but it was still there.
As far as my remarks about going hardcore, they are based on the fact that I think I have a little bit of arthritis. I also have soreness in my hip and knee that doesn't bother me in everyday life but really hurts if I take things too fast, as far as exercising. It hurts to the point where I can barely walk.
Haven't seriously exercised in a while. Wasn't sure what was out there, things that I hadn't heard of. Right now I'm doing wii fit.
Used to be a competitive swimmer a kazillion years ago....might think about trying that again.
You should check that out and make sure you don't have deterioration in that area.(hip)
Moving will make it better though if it is arthritis. Its the getting going part that is hard.
As a food tip you may want to try some tart cherry juice for your condition and look into a diet that is focused on controlling inflammation. Even if you only do it to start it can help get over the pain of starting when dealing with pain issues.
Wow this Nerd Fitness is a FUN website! I just read that one workout and watched the video - I'm gonna adapt it to suit my needs, and weave it into my weekly scheduled workouts. For me:
20 sumo squats combined with 5-pound dumbbell curls
10 pushups
20 walking lunges with 5-lb triceps kickbacks
15 yoga ball situps
10 8-lb dumbbell rows (per arm)
60 second plank
15 reverse crunches
2 laps around the room at a sprint pace (I can't do jumping jacks).
As you can see, I add a lot of lower torso exercise. Due to spinal problems I need to keep my abdominals and lower back muscles especially strong. So no matter what I'm working on from one day to another, I'm always including core exercises, and especially lower torso.
Anyway, thanks so much for the link! I didn't know it existed. It's perfect for "old fogies" like me who can't (and don't want to) become muscleheads, but still need to keep fit and keep our hearts pumping!
Looks like there are some great ideas there, thanks!
