That is a pace of about 4 min, 42 seconds per mile over 26.2 miles, or 12.7 mph for you treadmillers. The previous record was 2:03:38 by Patrick Makau, also of Kenya. There are about 3-5 runners at this level, all Kenyan. Others are Martin Mosop, and Geoffrey and Emannuel Mutai (not related).
The marathon WR has been gradually declining since the first recording 100 years ago, 1913, when the mark was 2:36:06. Nowadays 2:36 is unlikely to win a typical Podunk marathon. In 1981, the record was down to 2:08, and now 2:03:23.
I asked Uli Steidl, 9 time Seattle marathon winner, what he thought was behind the breakthroughs of the past 2 years or so in the marathon. Sadly, his opinion was that it was largely due to performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
Amazing. Too bad that scumbag specator jumped in front of him in the finish line, but im sure Wilson is happy nonetheless beating the record and scoring over 100k in prize money.
Per capita income in Kenya is around $1700/yr so he is set for life regardless.
According to the site, it looks like its all down to the NYC marathon to determine if kebede takes home the prize or Stephen Kiprotich. I'm running it as well so it should be a good time.
On a separate, but equally inspirational note, a man with muscular distrophy finished the Chicago Marathon just under 17 hours.

Most impressive athletic feats of the last 50-60 years are due to PEDs unfortunately. PED use is most rampant in weightlifting and track and field. Still awesome events to watch though and PED use doesn't bestow hard work and discipline upon users.
Just amazing, I don't know how people run that fast for so long! I have run a few half and full marathons, and the stamina is astounding.
