I did sprinting in high school but never any long distance. The race isn't util July but any advice on how to train? I was gonna start with going to the gym as normal but with additional running. Maybe start with 15 minute runs and extend, then take the runs outside.
A 5K is pretty short, without obstacles should take 20-30 minutes max. So with obstacles be prepared for maybe an hour's worth of effort. One of the guys that I know on another forum trains Spartan racers. Basic training includes using kettlebells, pushups, pullups and a long run on the weekend.

Thanks for the tips! Seems like I just need to add some more running in my routine
A 5K is a short race for distance runners but for anyone who doesn't run on a regular basis, it is a long run. It would be a good idea to get some idea on what kind of obstacles are involved so you could plan your training accordingly. I would concentrate on runs up to at least 45 minutes and look into intervals after you have been running for awhile. Pull-ups might be the most beneficial exercise you can do to get ready for the obstacles.
Also go trail running, Spartan races are known for using the course as another obstacle. If the course is in a hilly area, be prepared to run up and down hills the whole time. So learn how to run downhill and how much you can trust your shoes on the trails.
cats- i had started another thread on this a while back. I am also looking to do a Spartan, but also looking at Warriar dash and Rugged Maniac. They are all about 3miles with varying obstacles amounts. I couldnt do one now but in a few months probably. Which one are you looking to do. Mine will be either MD , PA, or Va.
