Why am i not surprised as this stuff has been around since the 60's? When i first got into bodybuidling in my late teens back in the 1980's was was very tempted to get on ''Dianabol'' as it was SUPER easy to get but i decided to go natural which i'm glad i did.
If you are a body builder, my guess is there is a LOT of pressure to take these drugs. When I worked out at Gold's gym in Venice Beach, I saw a lot of beefy men (and a few women as well), and I am sure they took enhancements. I think some of it relates to image dysmorphia and the feeling that one can never be big enough just as anorexics can never be thin enough.
Of course, there is a lot of body image dysmorphia going on in Los Angeles in general, considering all the plastic surgery.

Spot on about that disorder as i myself suffered from it for a while as i went from 6/3 145 lb of skin and bone ''ectomorph'' to 6/3 230 lb to looking like a Middle Linebacker and yet i still thought i was skinny when i looked in the mirror back then. Thankgod i grew out of that mindset as now it's all about fitness and longevity just like my idol 96 y/o Jack Lalanne

There are far worse things to be concerned with that steroid usage...
Most of these substances have been villified by the media and politicians with an agenda. Congressional hearings were held on steroids in baseball. They debated the issue far longer than Iraq or Afganistan. Why should it matter what a professional athlete takes? We pay to see the very best of the best, so in essence, arent we, the consumer's at fault here? If you had to take a drug with the KNOWN side effects of anabolic steroids to keep your job, would you do it? Something to think about...
The Government could be spending my tax dollars on other, far more important things, IMO.
The fact that people think that these bodybuilders got the way they are by taking "xyz" supplement that they got at their local GNC is a testament to their own ignorance. It's happened forever and will continue to happen. The government regulating it so harshly is part of the problem. Hell, government regulation, in general, is part of the problem. I get accused of using and I never have. People, for the most part, have NO IDEA how to tell if someone is "on" or not. They just assume if someone is bigger/stronger/faster that they are using. They think it has nothing to do with hard work, determination and plain old God given talent. Americans, in general, think that if someone is better at something than they are, they must be cheating, when, in fact, they just $uck.
