Are inflatable kayaks a waste of money? I have a small car and really don't want a roof rack. I really only want a 1 person kayak. For me probably the inflatable is better because of space, but I always imagined they weren't as study as the traditional kayak and that it would take awhile to inflate. I suppose if I did get a traditional 1 person, I could put it in my car and have some of it stick out the window or sunroof since I am right near the lake.
I would definitely go for the traditional kayak. But if you are just an occasional kayaker and wont do any mile white water or ocean kayaking, the inflatable may be for you. If you dont have any storage space at home, then the inflatable would be better. But, if you have the space, traditional is much better.
What lake are you near in Chatsworth where you can kayak?

Im still waiting to find out where the lake is near the OP in Chatsworth where she can go kayaking. I was born and raised here in L.A. and dont know of any lake near her where she can take her own kayak to kayak.
Also, what did you decide on? Inflatable or traditional?
I vote for inflatable! The main reason is that easy storage, transport, and setup = more time on the water! The high end inflatable kayaks are made of the same skin as river rafting boats or Zodiacs (durable).
When it comes to inflatables, the difference is in the design. Take your pick: low-end or high-end. If you pick high-end, you're in luck because it will still cost you less than a hard shell kayak.
Here are a few of the differences between the low-end and the high-end inflatables: performance (high-end inflatable kayaks are designed to move efficiently through the water), durability (high-end inflatable kayaks have a rubber coating which tends to bounce back under stress while the low-end boats tend to rip or break), quick-drying (some boats dry off quickly while others need to be carefully air dried).
Personally I like the Innova kayaks. No, I love the Innova kayaks. :-)
