I hit Fairbanks 2-3 times a year and spend anywhere from 2 days to a week there. I have never run into any serious crime as such, but I don't drink and the most I'll do on an evening is go out to dinner and hit a bookstore (Gulliver's, by preference). So, info on crime is minimal from my viewpoint.

I never had a problem in all the time I lived in Fairbanks and same goes with Anchorage..
On the flip side, when I went down to Florida to visit my mom this past fall, someone broke into the car I rented and stole a bunch of crap..
There's no place in the nation that is perfect... but I do think Alaska gets a bad rap on certain crime statistics because of the way they measure them using the "per capita" system.
